Healing Hearts Participates in Annual Rally for Recovery

Columbus – Healing Hearts Counseling Center participated Friday in the 16th Annual Rally for Recovery and Advocacy Day at the Ohio Statehouse West Plaza in Columbus. The rally was hosted by Ohio Citizen Advocates for Addiction Recovery – OCAAR in partnership with the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center – Talbot Hall as part of National Recovery Month.

Hundreds of Ohioans impacted by addiction gathered at the statehouse to celebrate recovery and meet with legislators to talk about the opioid epidemic.

Clients of the Healing Hearts Counseling Center located at 6434 E. Main St., #201 in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, attended the rally. Garry Perez, 35, and his fiancé, Amanda Miller, 28, were happy to share their story of recovery and raise awareness about the opioid crisis in Ohio.

Perez is celebrating 13 months of sobriety after struggling with addiction for 15 years. He’s a mentor to individuals at the center who are fresh in recovery whom he calls “newcomers”. Perez says it was important for him to attend the rally to be a voice for those recovering from addiction.

“I want to show the newcomers that there is hope and you can live a normal life,” Perez said.

“I also want people to understand that just because you fall victim to an addiction it doesn’t mean you have to be discarded. Everyone deserves a second chance,” Perez said.

Miller has been battling addiction since the age of 15. She is celebrating one year, one month and 19 days of sobriety. She said access to treatment programs plays an important role in the recovery process for individuals struggling with an addiction.

“Addiction is a disease, it’s not a choice and many people don’t understand that,” Miller said. “So many people are suffering because of the limited number of treatment programs. Funding is needed and it’s important we all work together to help everyone receive treatment,” Miller said.

Gov. John Kasich was honored at the rally. He was presented with the Recovery Ally Award. Tracy Plouck, Director of the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, accepted it on his behalf.
